Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Water Tower, Building 49 in Fort Sheridan, IL (1890). It has been an important navigational structure since its construction. It was built with brick made from Lake Bluff clay. Allegedly inspiried by the St Mark's Campanile in Venice, the tower originally rose 228 feet, including a steeply-pitched pagoda on top. The roof was lowered in 1940, and the tower is now 167 feet high.

Fort Sheridan was founded in 1877 over concerns arising from the Haymarket Affair. The Commercial Club of Chicago donated 632 acres to the government to develop a military base to protect Chicago. The timing was fortuitous, as the troops were used only a few years later to quell the Pullman Strike. The base was one of the first commissions for Holabird & Roche, who designed the structures with Richardsonian Romanesque influence.

Fort Sheridan became an important national training center starting with the Spanish-American War. It also trained troops for World War I, and was a processing center for tens of thousands of troops returning home. They provided returning troops with physical and occupational training so that they could re-enter the workforce. Over 500,000 men, including George Patton, were processed at Fort Sheridan for World War II. After the war, the base was used as a storage and supply facility for Project Nike. The base closed in 1993 following the findings of the 1988 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The Army Reserve has maintained a small presence on the base since, but most of the area has been converted into a residential community, including housing for Naval Station Great Lakes.
