Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Design for the redevelopment of the Wawel Hill, made by Stanisław Wyspiański (1869-1907) and Władysław Ekielski (1855-1927) at the turn of 1904 and 1905. This project was called the Wawel Acropolis.

Originally the design was planned as a background and stage scenery for the plays by Wyspiański. In 1905, emperor Franz Joseph I ordered the army to vacate the hill. The design of the Acropolis became one of the idealistic concepts of a restoration. The idea was that the political, social, scientific and cultural life of the Polish nation was to be focused on the hill. Therefore it was planned that the hill would house the most important state and cultural institutions, such as the Senate, the Sejm, the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. The design for the Acropolis was inspired by the most famous landmarks of Krakow's architecture, thus becoming a historiosophic synthesis of the history and spirit of Poland.

The model was made based on the original designs and is located in the National Museum in Kraków.
