William Jennings Bryan was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1896, 1900, and 1908. This cartoon indicates that even in 1912, after three unsuccessful campaigns, he was still a giant in the party, wielding great influence. He weighs potential Democratic presidential candidates to see if any are politically heavy enough to meet his standard. The figures are (left-right): Senator John Kern of Indiana, Bryan’s vice-presidential running mate in 1908; Speaker of the House Champ Clark of Missouri; Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey; Governor Judson Harmon of Ohio (in the balance); Joseph W. Folk, former governor of Missouri (1905-1909); Congressman Oscar Underwood of Alabama; Congressman Ollie James of Kentucky; and Governor Eugene Foss of Massachusetts. The unnamed figure in profile may represent an unknown “dark horse” candidate. Clark, Wilson, Harmon, and Underwood had the highest delegate count going into the Democratic National Convention, where Wilson finally won the nomination on the 46th ballot.
