Durch die Eröffnung des Rheinhafens vollzog sich der Wandel Karlsruhes von der provinziellen Beamtenstadt zum wichtigen Industriestandort im Südwesten. Bis Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden alle schwereren Lasten für Karlsruhe, wie beispielsweise Holz, über die Pfinz in die Stadt gebracht. Damals richtete die Bürgerschaft Karlsruhes die Bitte an Großherzog Karl Friedrich, die Stadt durch einen Kanal mit dem Rhein zu verbinden.
