Summary

[edit]
Description

West Park United Reformed Church, Harrogate, England. The building was designed as West Park Congregational Church by Lockwood and Mawson, and completed in 1861-1862. Showing the north wall, viewed from the north-west.

Note that the original pairs of heads along the roofline are missing on this north side, and have been replaced with modern uncarved cubes. The south-side heads were replaced with more recent heads of Protestant Reformers - but these on the north side have simply been removed. This begs the question as to whether the church authorities did not like the heads on the north side, but could not afford to replace them. William Ingle and Charles Mawer from the firm Mawer and Ingle were original stone carvers here, so the original 1860s heads would have been by their portrait-carver colleague Catherine Mawer.
