Summary
[edit]DescriptionWest Side Market, Ohio City, Cleveland, OH (28569076977).jpg | The West Side Market, located at West 25th Street and Lorain Avenue in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood, is the city's oldest still operating public market in the city. The market can trace its roots to 1840, when the first market house for the then-independent City of Ohio was built across West 25th Street on the current site of Market Square Park, which saw the construction of a one-story wooden market house in 1868, known as the Pearl Street Market, and was a center of activity on the near west side for decades. Due to massive population expansion during the late 19th Century, the old market house became inadequate for the needs of the enlarged population, and thus in 1902, a larger tract of land was purchased across West 25th Street, and plans were set in motion for the current market house. In 1912, the current market house, designed by local architecture firm Hubbell and Benes, opened to serve the near west side's population. Constructed in the Neoclassical and Byzantine Revival style, the Market consists of two structures, a large concourse building with 100 market stalls for sellers of various goods, and an L-shaped 85-stall produce market building that wraps around the side and rear of the building away from the street. The building quickly became a major landmark in the city, and features a large and highly visible and iconic clocktower that towers over the intersection of Lorain Avenue and West 25th Street. The West Side Market Tenants' Association was formed in 1915 to maintain the market and provide resources for upgrades and renovations, which still is in existence today. The building has been renovated several times, most notably in 1953, 1973, the 1990s, and 2004. Today, the market is a hub of activity and one of the city's most notable and iconic sites, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, owing to its architectural significance and cultural importance to the city. |
