Summary

[edit]
Description

This test weight car was used by the Western Weighing & Inspection Bureau (Denver, Colorado, USA) to check the accuracy of scales that were used to weigh loaded railroad freight cars. This car is now on display at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado.

The hill in the background is South Table Mountain. The rocks exposed at the top is a Lower Paleocene lava flow composed of porphyritic shoshonite (= porphyritic potassium-rich alkaline basalt). Four lava flows in all are present here & at nearby North Table Mountain. The vent complex erupted an estimated 0.75 cubic kilometers of lava. The shoshonite is mottled light brown on weathered surfaces and dark gray with black- to gray-colored phenocrysts on fresh surfaces. Phenocrysts are generally 3 to 5 mm in size and consist of olivine, augite pyroxene, plagioclase feldspar, and sometimes magnetite. Contaminant minerals include sanidine feldspar and biotite mica. Olivine and biotite mica do not occur together, so their mutual presence in a rock indicates mixing (contamination - in this case, potassium contamination).

The top of South Table Mountain has exposures of the # 3 lava flow (= the second-youngest of the four flows).
