English: HOW TO GET THERE
This Métis-majority community is located on the western shore of Pinehouse Lake in the boreal forest. Pinehouse, located approximately 198 kilometres from the nearest Cameco operation at Key Lake, is linked to other communities by an all-weather gravel road and a local airport. POPULATION The majority of the residents in this 1,400-person community speak Cree as their first language. Pinehouse, like many other northern communities, has a very young population, with approximately 48 percent of residents under the age of 20. HIGHLIGHTS The area has long been a trading hub, with Hudson Bay's Souris River trading post located in the northern part of the lake from 1875 to 1939. A small group of Aboriginal families from along the coast arrived around the turn of the century. |
