Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Why preserve this big hunk of steel?

This steel structure looks like a bridge, but it is actually a dam. It is called the Emergency Swing Dam, since it was designed to swing out over the canal in an emergency and greatly slow the flow of water.

Only nine emergency swing dams were constructed worldwide, and today, this is the only one remaining. Of the nine constructed, this is the only one ever put to the test under emergency conditions.

The Emergency Swing Dam is an innovative engineering achievement designed and built by Canadians over 100 years ago, and is commemorated for its successful use during the accident in 1909. Parks Canada protects the dam and the canal to preserve our heritage for this and future generations.
