Dansk: Købmanden og politikeren Alfred Hage (1803-1872) bestilte dette billede hos Marstrand for at fejre sine forældres guldbryllup. Ifølge familietraditionen spørger hun: ”Må jeg låne de to brune heste?” Faderen døde imidlertid før billedet var færdiggjort.
English: The grocer and politician Alfred Hage (1803-1872) commissioned this picture from Marstrand to celebrate the golden anniversary of his parents. According to the story passed down through the generations, she is asking her husband whether she can borrow the two brown horses. His father died before the painting was finished. Marstrand painted studies of them both. See "Other versions".
