William Boothby, Sheriff and Electoral Commissioner |

Description |
William Robinson Boothby (1829-1903) was South Australia's long-serving sheriff and electoral commissioner (1856-1903). His enduring legacy involved provisions in the colony's electoral acts of 1856 and 1858, notably the secret ballot (widely adopted in the Australian colonies and overseas) and the ballot paper itself. He supervised every election in South Australia from 1856 to 1903. He also introduced a number of prison reforms. 'In [his] multiple positions he served with dignity and competence, investing them with ... great prestige.' (G. N. Hawker, 'Boothby, William Robinson (1829–1903)', Australian Dictionary of Biography, National Centre of Biography, Australian National University, http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/boothby-william-robinson-3026/text4437, published first in hardcopy 1969, accessed online 20 February 2019; Register, 14 July 1903, p6.) The Federal seat of Boothby in South Australia was named in his honour. The State Library of South Australia has an almost identical photograph (SLSA B8073) dated c1900, photographer unknown. |
