Description
English: Lieutenant Colonel William H. Watson (1808-1846) commanded the Battalion of Baltimore and District of Columbia Volunteers in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). This monument is at the corner of West North Avenue and (West) Mount Royal Terrace in Reservoir Hill/Bolton Hill neighborhoods, in Baltimore, Maryland. Sculpture by local artist, Edward Berge and dedicated September 1903, on 57th Anniversary of death at the Storming of Monterrey, Mexico. Unveiled by last surviving child - daughter Monterey Watson Iglehart with original U. S. flag used to shroud father's body upon leaving Mexico. Main speaker at ceremony was Edwin Warfield, president of Fidelity and Deposit Trust Co. of Md. and attended by many political representatives, war heritage groups and large audience of citizens. Located originally further southwest at West Mount Royal Avenue and West Lanvale Street in front of Maryland Institute, College of Art and later moved to present site in 1930 upon extension of North Howard Street project.
