Summary[edit]

Description
English: Watercolor, bodycolor, and gum arabic on paper, with scratching out

29 5/8 X 21 1/2 in., 75.3 X 54.6 cm.

Originally exhibited at the 1839 Spring Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours with the title Interior of a Stable and at the 1857 Exhibition of the Art Treasures of the United Kingdom in Manchester as Stable Boy, this large watercolor has been known as The Eavesdropper since the late 19th Century. It shows a boy listening to what is being said on the other side of a window of the barn at the artist's family farm in Bramley, England. It was praised by Sir Frederick Burton, an accomplished watercolor painter and one-time director of the National Gallery, London, as being "the finest water-colour in the world." It was also one of four watercolors included in his 1879-80 exhibition of works by William Hunt and Samuel Prout which John Ruskin considered to be the highest examples of William Henry Hunt's achievements as an artist.
