Summary
[edit]DescriptionWilliamsburg Art & Historical Center - fmr Kings County Savings Bank - Williamsburg, Brooklyn - 20200906.jpg |
English: The NRHP-listed Kings County Savings Bank Building, 135 Broadway at Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, September 2020. Built in 1868 and exemplary of the Second Empire architectural style, King & Wilcox's design for the building brings to bear Classical details that are ubiquitous almost to the point of heavy-handedness - witness the carved-stone pediments that crown not only each window but also the entrance portico, and the balustrades that make up each windowsill as well as surrounding the building at ground level. Capping everything off is the requisite mansard roof, faced in hexagonal fishscale shingles colored in decorative patterns. Kings County Savings Bank was liquidated in 1995 after 135 years of existence as a financial institution, at which point its former headquarters had been vacated for nearly a decade. It's now home to the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center. |
