Description
English: House "De Meerminnen" (The Mermaids), Wolwevershaven 21, Dordrecht, The Netherlands, was built in 1646 with capital from the estate of privateer captain Simon Dancer. In the early 20st century, the author Top Naeff lived here. The narrow four-storey building has a very rich ornate stone facade in Louis XIV style. The handsome middle ressault has around the first floor window scrolls, ornamental vases and herms to the floor windows scrolls, ornamental vases and garlands. The profiled cornice is supported on either side by sculpted consoles. All windows contain empire sashes. The original door with fanlight is still present and is framed with recessed pilasters and a finely carved frieze as closure. The house has a hipped roof. A river-facing room (Room Meuse) has a high marble mantlepiece and bosom with stucrelief. The paneling is also in Louis XIV style (circa 1740). However, the original ceiling has been demolished. The marble decoration of the corridors has been removed.
