English: Arms of Woodrouffe of Barnstaple in Devon: Gules, on a chevron argent three buck's heads erased sable a chief per fess nebulée of the third and second (Source: Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitation of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.802). James Woodrouffe (d.1609) of Barnstaple was Mayor of Barnstaple in 1605 (Vivian, p.802; Lamplugh, Lois, Barnstaple: Town on the Taw, South Molton, 2002, p.156). His first wife was Jone Worth, a daughter of Pawle Worth, thrice Mayor of Barnstaple in 1577, 1592 and 1603, who signed a letted dated 8 April 1588 concerning the town's objection to having been ordered by the Privy Council to provide an excessive number of ships to meet the Spanish Armada. (Lamplugh, pp.50,156) James's second wife was a member of the Pollard family of Langley in the parish of Yarnscombe, Devon.(Vivian, p.802) |
