| Description |
woollypod, Astragalus purshii var. tinctus, Nevada, White Mountains, Sugarloaf, Pinchot Creek - Columbus Salt Marsh watershed, elevation 2667 m (8750 ft). This variety is common and widespread in dry habitats at middle elevations throughout much of California and the western half of the Great Basin. Sometimes also known as rabbitsfoot milkvetch, it has brilliant purple flowers when found early enough in the season. Two other species in the region with similar densely hairy pods are Astragalus newberry (somewhat larger flowers) and Astragalus coccineus (even larger bright scarlet flowers), both of which also differ by having straight appressed hairs on the leaves (versus loose and curly in A. purshii), and strictly leafless stems above the base (versus shortly leafy in A. purshii). |
