Summary
[edit]DescriptionWord of Power Church - fmr Temple Israel - Palmer Park, Detroit - 20201213.jpg |
English: Word of Power Church, 17400 Manderson Road at Merton Road, Detroit, Michigan, December 2020. Designed by architect William Kapp of the firm of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, this is a very late example of Art Moderne that's heavily influenced, as you would imagine given its construction date of 1949, by the International Style. The entrance boasts restrained Classical influences such as stylized engaged columns flanking the doorway as well as a dentillated cornice above, with pilaster strips interspersed between the windows on the façade of the building's north wing (left) and porthole windows of the type typical of the style to the right of the entrance. The building was home to Temple Israel, a Reform Jewish synagogue that's now the largest in North America, from its completion in 1949 until their move to suburban West Bloomfield Township in 1980. It's now owned by Word of Power Church and is a contributing property to the NRHP-listed Palmer Park Apartment Building Historic District. |
