World Soil Day celebrates the importance of soil as a vital component of Earth's natural system. Soil contributes to humanity's food, water and energy security, and mitigates climate change and biodiversity loss. The United Nations has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils, and it is in January 2015 that NASA will launch the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission to globally measure the water present in soil. NASA's study of soil moisture will aid in predictions of plant growth and agricultural productivity, improve weather and climate forecasts, as well as, enhance abilities to predict droughts and floods.
