| Description | Wow. a steam engine all steamed up and ready to go! That's a far view of my ride. The train actually reverses up a short bit and then runs back to this location, so the powerful engine has barely enough time to build up steam thoroughly and speed up. Still, the sights and sounds and most of all the smell of steam traction were absolutely stupendous. The engine in charge is a C56 type 160- notes about the engine appear later in this album. (see next picture). This ride is available to visitors to the Kyoto Railway Museum for an additional fee of 300 yen- the ride lasts for a distressingly short ten minutes. Of the 23 locomotives at the Kyoto Railway Museum, 8 are kept in working condition, which take turns to carry passengers along a 1-kilometer route near the museum every 15 to 30 minutes from 11:00 to 16:00. This is the only museum in Japan where visitors can ride a real steam locomotive every day. (Kyoto, Japan, Apr/ May 2019) |
