Summary[edit]

Description
English: The wreathed hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus), a notable avian species indigenous to Asia's montane forests, holds a distinct presence with its characteristic blue-black band adorning its throat sac, earning it the moniker of the bar-pouched wreathed hornbill. Measuring between 75–100 cm in length, with males weighing 1.8–3.65 kg and females ranging from 1.36–2.7 kg, these birds exhibit a striking contrast of black plumage against white tails. Both genders feature a flattened, grooved casque atop their bills, adding to their unique appearance.

In their juvenile stage, both male and female wreathed hornbills display vibrant blue throats, a feature that evolves as they mature—the male's transitioning to a resplendent yellow, while the female's maintains its captivating blue hue.

Often observed in pairs or small flocks gracefully navigating between fruiting trees, wreathed hornbills are known for their resonant trumpeting croaks, a characteristic sound frequently heard during flight.

Despite their majestic presence, wreathed hornbills face significant threats from hunting, habitat fragmentation, and deforestation. This perilous situation prompted their classification as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2018, signifying a concerning decline in their global population due to these adverse factors.

Recent sightings of these iconic birds within the confines of Manas National Park, Assam, India.
