(geh. 1831, gest. 1888, Deutscher Kaiser und König von Preußen für 99 Tage) Die „liberale Hoffnung“ Preußens Friedrich III. war mit Prinzessin Victoria von Großbritannien und Irland verheiratet. Aus der Verbindung gingen acht Kinder hervor. Schon auf der ersten Weltausstellung in London 1851 hatte sich zwischen dem 19-jäh- rigen Prinzen Friedrich und der erst 11-jährigen englischen Prinzessin Victoria eine Zuneigung entwickelt, die in einem regen und jahrelangen Briefwechsel ihren Ausdruck fand. Nach dem einschneidenden Erlebnis der Revolution von 1848 neigte der junge Prinz auch dem englischen Konstitutionalismus und dem politischen Liberalismus der englischen Oberschicht zu. Beide Neigungen bestärkten sich gegenseitig. Widerstre- bend gab Friedrich Wilhelm IV. 1856 Friedrich die Erlaubnis, um die Hand Victorias anzuhalten. Die Verbindung war in Preußen wie in England gleichermaßen umstritten. Als Armeeführer hatte Kronprinz Friedrich entscheidenden Anteil an den siegreichen Schlachten von Königgrätz (1866 gegen Österreich) und Sedan (1870 gegen Frankreich), die der Proklamation des Deutschen Kaiserreichs am 18. Januar 1871 den Weg ebneten. Bismarck misstraute den liberalen Ansichten des Kronprinzen jedoch und sorgte dafür, dass dieser politisch isoliert blieb. Am 22. März 1888 starb Kaiser Wilhelm I. mit 91 fahren und Friedrich bestieg den Thron. Doch sein Kehlkopfkrebs war so weit fortgeschritten, dass er selbst nach 99 Tagen starb. |
