| Description |
English: The Wyckoff House, at 5816 Clarendon Road in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York, as seen in September 2020. The oldest existing building in New York City, the house dates to about 1655 and was home to Pieter Claesen Wyckoff (c. 1620-1694), a native of Norden, East Frisia (then part of the Netherlands, now part of Germany) who came to America as a teenager, spent six years as an indentured tenant farmer on Kiliaen van Rensselaer's massive estate across the river from what's now Albany, then moved to Brooklyn where he became a prominent landowner and served as justice of the peace. He also happens to be the photographer's 9x great-grandfather. Besides its age, the house is notable as an early and outstanding example of the Dutch Colonial-style wood-frame houses that served as typical residences in 17th-century New Netherland, and on that basis was named both a National Historic Landmark and a City of New York Landmark. The house narrowly averted demolition in the mid-20th century and is now a museum located at the center of a small park. |
