Xiphactinus audax Leidy, 1870 - fossil fish skeleton from the Cretaceous of Kansas, USA. (CMC VP6289, Cincinnati Museum of Natural History & Science, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA) From museum signage: This extinct bony fish, Xiphactinus audax, belongs to the group that includes most modern fish - the teleosts. Tarpon-like in appearance, this predaceous giant is eleven feet long, but other examples grew up to 18 feet and were the largest teleosts known. Some fossils of Xiphactinus have been found with other large fish contained in their stomachs.
