Summary[edit]
DescriptionYauza 209-1 (before overhaul) - front open - idlers.jpg |
English: The Yauza 209-1 was a Soviet reel-to-reel tape recorder made since 1983. An unusually compact unit for 7-inch reels, the model uses an ancient but inherently robust and good sounding transport introduced in the 1960 Yauza-5 model. The well-kept, well-preserved unit shown here is expecting a major overhaul (apart from a loose belt, it's all working but certainly the 1980s capacitors should be replaced, etc.).
In play/ff/rewind modes, instead of moving idlers or pulleys to the spools, the mech moves the spools themselves. Not much, 3 to 5 millimeters - enough to engage the idler (if moved inward) or the brake pad (if moved outward). The idlers, brake pads and of course the motor are fixed. |

Motor shaft and pulley
FF idler. It's always in contact with the motor pulley
Capstan idler (removed out of the way in stop mode)
Capstan flywheel
Brake pad
This lever moves the supply spool outward/left (to the brake pad) or inward/right (to the motor shaft in rewind mode).
Auto stop switch physically disconnects the motor. No relays nor thyristor, just a zobel network across the contacts
Four holes to adjust idler-to-flywheel tension
Four holes to adjust braking force
