B and C, two 3-celled specimens with a bi-layered envelope. D, a close-up view of C, showing detail of the envelope. Note that the inner layers of the envelopes of B and C are smooth, while the outer layers are ornamented. E-G, extant embryos of rotifer Asplanchna ebbesbornii (1). E, ornamented fertilized egg undergoing cell division. F, two-celled embryo. G, four-celled embryo. v.m. = vitelline membrane; e.sh. = egg-shell membrane. Note that the living embryos possess bi-layered envelopes, the outer layer (egg-shell membrane) is ornamented, and the inner layer (vitelline membrane) is smooth. Scale bar represents 100μm.
