Example of a yojijukugo, a Japanese word consisting out of four kanji characters with a (non)-idiomic meaning.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: This yojijukugo consists of the four kanji characters 沈魚落雁 [ちんぎょらくがん; hepburn: chingyorakugan], it has an idiomatic meaning, meaning that the meaning cannot be determined without further background knowledge. The characters mean separately: sink, fish, fall, and wild goose. This yojijukugo comes from a well-known lecture by the Chinese philosopher Zuang Zhou (4th century BC) about the Four Beauties of Classical China: Xi Shi, Wang Zhaojun, Diao Chan and Yang Guifei. Zhou wrote, "When fish see them, they will swim into the depths or sink; when birds see them, they will fly away or crash; when deer see them, they will gallop away in shame." 沈魚落雁 has become synonymous with: a very beautiful woman.
