Konwent zapewniał mu opiekę, rozwój gospodarczy i kulturalny. Otaczająca rynek zabudowa to głównie parterowe, a rzadziej piętrowe domy z XIX i początku XX w. Niektóre z nich powtarzają starsze wzorce podcieniowych domostw (pierzeja południowa i północna). --- Historic Architecture of Stary Sącz The oldest town of the Sądecczyzna region is located on a hill between the rivers Dunajec and Poprad, where the former road to Hungary and the Nowy Sącz – Nowy Targ route used to cross. Sącz was first founded between 1268 and 1272. At first it developed rapidly, but soon its position was threatened by Nowy Sącz, established nearby by the Czech king Wenceslas II. Yet the town survived, and it received new founding rights in 1358 from the hands of King Casimir the Great (Kazimierz Wielki). Since the beginning of its existence, Stary Sącz was closely linked to the Convent of Poor Clares. The convent provided protection, and nurtured the economic and cultural growth of the town. What makes Stary Sącz special is the historic layout of the city, and its traditional-scale of architecture, remaining virtually unchanged from the old. Key points of the mediaeval city included the market square, and three churches: St Clare’s, the Franciscan Church, and the Parish Church. At the heart of the city is the square with eight streets leading out from its corners. Until 1795, a magnificent town hall had stood in the middle of the square, but it fell victim to a fire. The dwellings around the main square are mostly single-storey, sometimes two-storey, buildings dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some follow older patterns of colonnaded houses (on the north and south sides of the square). The so-called Dom na Dołkach (House over the Hollows) is a typical late-Baroque burgher dwelling with a mansard shingle roof. Since 1956 it has housed the Regional Museum. Dating from the late 17th century, the house was reconstructed after the fire of 1795. Circulation in the interior is divided into two, while original barrel vaults and a 17th-century floor made of rounded river stones have survived. The picturesque quality of the square is enhanced with carefully preserved details which have been added to where necessary: the cobblestones, the lighting, the fences, and the wide-spreading linden trees, planted in 1877. South of the square stands the Gothic church of Saint Elisabeth, remodelled in mid-17th century. Upon the eastern slope of a steep hill overlooking the town lies the Convent of Poor Clares founded at the end of the 13th century by Saint Kinga, who also established a Franciscan monastery at the same time. The latter was closed in 1782. Today the Church and Convent of Poor Clares are among the most precious monastic establishments in Poland. Over the years, the Convent of the St Clare, constructed in the first half of the 14th century, accumulated a wealth of historic paintings, sculptures, and other objects.
