Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 1878 campaign in the right-wing Lantern newspaper against the re-election of the liberal MP for Cape Town Saul Solomon who also owned the opposing Argus newspaper. The government of Solomons friend and ally John Molteno had just fallen, so he holds the headline reporting Change of Ministry and the giant Molteno is visible fading in the background haze. Solomon stands on a prostrate figure of Cape Town. The text at the bottom is taken from the work The Critic. In spite of the Lanterns campaign, Solomon was re-elected.
