Zachariah E. Simmons. Died of General Debility in Lexington, Aged 78 Years. Lexington, Kentucky; February 23, 1903. Zachariah E. Simmons, aged 74, died of general debility Sunday night. He was the original owner of George Wilkes and a noted breeder of trotting horses. Until recently he owned Wilkes Lodge stock farm. His horses are at present quartered at Ashland, Newberger and Jack Lawson being the only ones in training. When he lived in New York he was a sachem in Tammany Hall and a potent power in New York politics. With the Morrises, who ran Morris park, and W. C. France, deceased, he owned the controlling stock in the famous Louisiana lottery. He married Miss Bernstein of New York, who, with two brothers, W. L. Simmons, of Lexington, and Guenter Simmons, of Wisconsin, survive him. He was at time very wealthy, and leaves a large estate.
