Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Al-Medal by Julius Eduard Bennert, Cologne, from the metal of the crashed Zeppelin Z II (LZ 5) 1910 (50,7mm, 15,9g), Kaiser Nr. 355; struck by Mayer & Wilhelm, Stuttgart, in modification of a medal minted there shortly before, Kaiser Nr. 330[1]

obverse: Three airships above the city panorama of Cologne with Rhine Bridge, Great St. Martin and Cathedral. In the exergue, the date of the Bad Homburg parade next to the Cologne city coat of arms.

Note: When the Zeppelin Z II, stationed at the Reichsluftschiffhafen in Cologne-Bickendorf, was destroyed by gusty storms on its return flight from a parade in Bad Homburg on April 25, 1910, near Weilburg, the Cologne airship medal collector Julius Eduard Bennert (1856-1929) sent his son Andreas by motorcycle to Weilburg to get hold of aluminum remains of the Zeppelin. From this aluminum, he was able to have 22 copies of a medal minted according to his designs.[2]
