La FIAT 30hp, di sua proprietà, di cui perse il controllo mentre tentava di sorpassare a folle velocità, per sfida, un'altra vettura, precipitò nel fiume Rodano a Ginevra, dove Samuele annegò in un metro d'acqua rimanendo incastrato tra il sedile e il volante. Gli altri due passeggeri se la cavarono con leggere contusioni e molto spavento. Il terribile incidente abbe risonanza anche fuori dalla Svizzera.
