Description
English: This sword belonged to Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, one of the earliest converts to Islam and a prominent companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The sword has a curved blade and a silver hilt with floral motifs. The hilt is inscribed with the name of Zubayr and his epithet, Hawari Rasul Allah (‘Disciple of Messenger of God’), which was bestowed upon him by the Prophet Muhammad for his military service1. The sword dates back to the 17th century Ottoman period, and is a rare example of Islamic art and history. It is currently displayed at the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul2.
