Description
Nederlands: De aanvankelijk kleine leprozenkolonie Bethesda aan de Boven Suriname rivier werd gesticht door de Evangelische Broeder Gemeente (Hernhutters). Omdat er in 1728 een verbod werd uitgevaardigd voor lepreuze slaven zich op de openbare weg te bevinden werd de besloten kolonie steeds groter. Ook het zich daarbij ontwikkelende dorp breidde zich uit in Oud- en Nieuw Bethesda. Pas in 1763 werd er een verplicht onderzoek ingesteld op lepra bij alle pas aangekomen slaven. In 1791 werd de eerste gouvernementele leprozie te Voorzorg aan de Saramacca gesticht. In 1899 werd Bethesda gesubsidieerd door het gouvernement in samenwerking met Hervormd, Luthers en EBG: Protestantsche vereniging tot verpleging van lepralijders. De naam Bethesda verwijst naar een scene uit de bijbel (Johannes,5) waarin Jezus bij een bron ("bethesda" in het hebreeuws) de lammen en zieken zou hebben genezen. bron:http://dpc.uba.uva.nl
