What is: Image:寶藏巖4.JPG and what categories should it be in? / Fred Chess 08:05, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[回复]

I have tried to figure out what the English name of this temple is, but so far, no luck. I have figured out it is in Taiwan. The name means literally "Precious Rock" (precious as in treasure, gems etc) and in simplified characters it is 宝藏岩 (bao3 zang4 yan2). It's a Buddhist temple. It might have something to do with a "Goddess of mercy" statue (which there is info on in English, in google, but I haven't found anything that seems to be this building). pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:34, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[回复]
Thank you. Do you mind if I add other image questions to this Village pump? I don't know where to post them.... To me, the characters only look like this: ???4.JPG. / Fred Chess 15:42, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[回复]
Ouch. Yeah, you need CJK (East Asian) fonts installed. You can post them here and we can have a shot. :) One trick I have figured out, to try and find basic information on a picture, is to do the 'check usage' and see what articles it is used in. If the image is being used with a caption, then great - now we have a native language description for the picture. And if the article it's in has an English equivalent (the little interwiki links list on the left), then doubly great - know we can actually tell what it is. Unfortunately this one had no equivalent in en:. Also, if a user is has uploaded many pictures without information or categorisation, I would try and contact an admin who speaks their native language and ask them to help them understand Commons policy, and if they continue to upload pictures without source info etc, ask that admin to block them for a short period. (more appropriate for copyvios than just missing categories.) You can usually find their native language by doing a check-usage to see where their images are being used, then check that against the list of admins at COM:A. pfctdayelise (translate?) 23:57, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[回复]

I love trying to crack these unknowns using all the cool net tools, so I looked into this one a bit, though my level of Chinese is only at using Babelfish and comparing squigglies. Anyway, the image description here says that it's from Treasure Hill in Taipei, and indeed, there is an area in Taipei called Treasure Hill. Googling for it I find a page with a photo of the hill and a temple at its base. On top of the hill there is a mast of some sort, like in our image. On another site found with the same Google search, there is a map of the Treasure Hill area, and the site's front page gives an address "台北市汀州路三段230巷底". I try to enter that into their local map site http://www.urmap.com but it gives me a strange looking place that doesn't look like anything, and I don't know how to split the squigglies into the road name only, so dead end there. Ok, on the site with the address they also mention that the place is near the Gongguan Station. Looking at a Taipei metro map, the station is near an easily identifiable corner of a river, and not hard to find on Google Earth. Towards the river from the station there is a foresty place, some bad looking buildings and a bigger complex that could be a temple, just like in the picture of the whole hill. Satellite images of 25°0′38″N 121°31′58.75″E / 25.01056°N 121.5329861°E / 25.01056; 121.5329861 fit perfectly with the map on the other site. I can also locate the place on the urmap Taipei map where the number written on the road and some of the squigglies resemble the other address. Perhaps the options on the right would revel something as well? Also on a photo site that Google Earth links to, there is a photo from half way up the hill looking down to the temple. Most such temples look the same to me though so I'm not sure, but my reasoning convinces me!
The hill map calls the place Treasure Hill Temple (寶藏巖寺), or Shih-Bi Tan, or Guan-Yin Ting. What surprises me though, is that I can't find any other photos of it on the net using these names. The area is said to have international interest, so I would expect there to be more photos. But according to a news article the place is not at its best right now. Well, this was fun, perhaps soon someone from around there can confirm it in a few seconds... :) --Para 21:10, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[回复]

Oh, the discussion at the top was from a year ago, and the information that the photo was from Treasure Hill was actually added after it. Uh, well, at least there's some coordinates to be verified now, yay. --Para 21:22, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[回复]
