First publication[edit]
Hi @Butko, this image's license is based on its first publication, which is not mentioned here or in the source where this image was found. Do you have info/evidence of first publication for this and your other Makhno image uploads from this source? czar 16:15, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
- Likely not first publication, but I found this photo sans background in the Ukrainian Canadian Students' Union magazine, STUDENT, reprinted in an August 1979 anniversary issue (p. 19) and originally published in Dec 1971. czar 17:04, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- Sketch based on photo from 1924; Kansas City Times, March 3, 1924 czar 17:11, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- This backgroundless version appears to be from a German publication in the era of Diego Abad de Santillán (Q952737). czar 17:25, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- Patterson 2000 (Makno and Memory, figure 11) cites IISG BG A8/730, a full archival version in the Senya Fléchine papers but no evidence of first publication czar 17:30, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- Eureka: [1][2][3]. This should settle early publication questions. czar 21:16, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Czar: Probably not needed, but I've added a couple cases of derivatives of the photograph being published in the United States before 1977 without a copyright notice. --Grnrchst (talk) 13:53, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Romania[edit]
How do we know this was taken in a displaced persons camp in Romania, apart from this (unreliable) caption? czar 15:45, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Czar: Sean Patterson (2020) places this photograph as having been taken in Romania in 1921. Victor Peters (1970) places it in 1921, but doesn't specify location. Whereas Alexandre Skirda (2004) places it in 1922, also without specifying its location. Given Makhno was in Romania from August 1921 to April 1922, I think it's safe to assume Romania is the correct location based on the information we have. --Grnrchst (talk) 14:05, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
