Update 20 March 2022

As awaited by @Maximalist: and 81.225.32.185, et al. I've updated the file with frames for the 16 days since the last update (4th March). The frames I choose are ones that I think are most representative near to the end of the day (Ukaine time), but not necessarily the last file to be uploaded, due to reverts and other aesthetic changes/fixes. The full list is on the file description page, under Other versions.
Since there are now 40 frames, I've modified the timings slightly, the first and last frame display for 1 second, then each frame in between is shown for 0.6 seconds (down from 0.9 seconds); if it may be more accessible to all be the previous duration, it's very easy to modify back.
Due to it being an ongoing situation, with irregular day-to-day changes, representative of the ground situation, certain days have less visible changes than others. The rendering of the frames from the derived SVG file also makes certain details less visible, but for the illustration purposes of this animation, it should be fine.
I do keep up with what's happening, but it's ongoing and not the clearest situation to make changes live. Unless someone else updates it sooner, or someone specifically ping requests me to add a couple frames, it may be over a week before I update the file (dependent on developments). — Bacon Noodles (talk • contribs • uploads) 00:07, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
Daily frames only

As the situation in Ukraine has developed, over the last month, it may almost be at the point that the animation is simplified, removing earlier frames, to show only the daily changes (which has been the case since 2 March 2022). The reason I maintained it showing progress across from multiple points in the day was because that's what the original file by @Immanuelle: included and I wanted to add to it, rather than making it a different interpretation. - I think it's probably an inevitable change, or through separate file, because adding an indefinite number of new frames/days would start to detract from its purpose, even if it was just for one more month, that'd be 31 new frames. The main problem with a change like this is, since it's an ongoing situation, we don't know what may happen. On the other hand, the day-to-day differences have definitely slowed and are much less visible (in an animation, like this), so those days don't add as much information. Regardless, I think any changes would need to be shown on the same time scale because I think showing from daily to weekly may undermine how long it's actually been going on for. Changing the colors to match the original map

With the color changes on the original map (Ukrainian advances now blue, slight changes for colorblind people) we should eventually make this map based on the same standards. It will be difficult though as we will essentially have to fork sections from the original map and change their colors, not that big a priority in the short term but in the long term it will be better for making this map standard with the other one, and more accessible to colorblind people Immanuelle💗 (please tag me)) 19:11, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Conversion to video?

This is an excellent animation, but the time scales involved have made it increasing impractical as a visual summary. Videos allow visitors to pause and seek, and the longer the conflict goes on, the more crucial these tools become. There are easily searchable tools to convert GIF to video. - I'm not sure, I think the main issue is that it would make the gif redundant and have two files showing the exact same thing. But, as this file expands, the actual .gif format becomes inefficient and very large, compared to a video file. - @Great Mercian This is a problem with Wikimedia Commons. To quote the error, "Due to technical limitations, thumbnails of high resolution GIF images such as this one will not be animated. The limit on Wikimedia Commons is width × height × number of frames ≤ 100 million." This means that the gif does not play when embedded in an article unless clicked on, and unfortunately, this problem can't be fixed. On the talk page of the main Ukraine War article, we concluded that the best course of action was to split the gif into two files, Part 1 and Part 2, or in places where that did not make sense, to add to the accompanying text in the article on the gif "click to view". The use of the full gif was supposed to be phased out in favor of the two still playable smaller gifs, but I guess that has not happened. Physeters✉ 05:07, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Why this gif cannot be updated

We are struggling with updating this gif primarily because of the fact the source map File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg has had an updated format where they now color code reclaimed territory with blue. So we will need to completely redo the entire map or have the blue section appear out of nowhere.
We had this problem too earlier at #This is desperately in need of an update
