Common issue: Names displayed in mixed languages[编辑]

When you view the SVG but see the labels in many languages (e.g., Russian, Georgian, and Hanzi), that is the result of your browser language preference settings.

The default language is English. If you are an English speaker, then all the labels should be in English. Every translation should have an English translation.

If you prefer Ukrainian over all other languages, then your browser will prefer to display labels in Ukrainian. If a label does not have a Ukrainian translation, then some other language will display (either another one of your preferences or the English default).

If you are seeing labels in unexpected languages, then you need to remove the unexpected languages from your browser preferences. See File_talk:2022_Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine.svg/Archive_3#Map_in_Chinese?.

Common issue: Skill needed to edit the map[编辑]

This SVG file is complex. It uses switch elements to translate place names and dates. It can be challenging to edit the file. The file needs to keep its translations, and editors need to avoid inadvertently introducing bad translations.

Anyone with a Commons account should be able to use SVG Translate to add or edit translations to this file. SVG Translate offers a simple interface. The only daunting part of using SVG Translate is the large number of translations presented: there are over 600 place names. (The tool may take some time to load.)

This SVG file needs some significant graphics editing skills to avoid introducing errors. As far as I know, Inkscape is the ONLY graphics editor that should be used on this file. (Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw will probably throw away all the existing translations.) However, Inkscape will often appear to produce the correct result when it does not. In particular, copying some text and then editing that text may still have the translations of the original. Some Inkscape users have inadvertently added graphics elements as children of a switch; those elements will not display correctly.

Someone with significant SVG and XML skills can edit the file with a text editor.

Please do not use an SVG optimizer on this file.

Common issue: Hyphenated langtags (such as zh-hans) no longer work.[编辑]

WMF upgraded Thumbor and librsvg. The upgrade introduced several bugs. One of those bugs now has hyphenated languages producing no text at all. Glrx (留言) 04:53, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[回复]

side note: zh-tw and zh-cn are not normally used by WMF servers (they use zh-Hant and zh-Hans), but many browsers may use zh-tw and zh-cn. Glrx (留言) 05:33, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[回复]

Common question: New York, Ukraine?[编辑]

There is actually a town called New York (or Niu-York) located in Ukraine.[1] It is not a mistake or vandalism. Physeters 01:44, 26 June 2030 (UTC)[回复]

it is Niu-York, not New York. Salto Loco (留言) 19:33, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[回复]
There are multiple spellings: both are correct Johnson524 (留言) 16:10, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[回复]
Then why we don’t say Crooked Horn instead of Kryvyi Rih or White Church instead of Bila Tserkva? The transliteration was approved by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine: https://www.kmu.gov.ua/npas/243262567 Salto Loco (留言) 01:27, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[回复]
@Salto Loco, first, the base Ukrainian word for "new" is "Новий" (Novyi), which is unrelated to"Нью" (Niu), so "New York" is not a literal translation. As far as I know, "Нью" is not a word in Ukrainian, and is just onomatopoeia for the English word "New". Second, some street signs heading into the town display "Нью-Йорк" along with the Latin alphabet transliteration "New York"(see the attached link for a photo). https://www.bbc.com/russian/features-57946832 Using "New York" instead of "Niu-York" is simply a stylistic choice. It also has precedent as evidenced by the fact that the English Wikipedia article uses the spelling "New York" instead of "Niu-York". If consensus is reached that we should use "Niu-York" instead of "New York", I gladly will change the spelling on the map. Physeters 00:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[回复]

Common question: Why do some lines have a hyphen (dash)?[编辑]

Some lines (such as the legend's "Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia" and "-") have a hyphen in an otherwise empty line. The hyphen is there to keep the second line from being deleted and confusing SVG Translate. Several languages use two lines for the translation. Glrx (留言) 12:54, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[回复]

See Phab:T216283#5106699; main ticket marked as resolved.

IIRC, there is another Phabricator ticket where empty tspan elements were removed and caused subsequent translation problems. If not, then a new ticket is needed.

The trouble may be at line 254. All the translatable nodes (text and tspan elements) are scanned. If the element has no child nodes (which would be true for an empty tspan), then that element would be removed. Consider a two-line translation where some lines may be empty. This code will remove the empty line. When a translation on that switch is attempted, the number of tspan elements will not match.

            if (!$translatableNode->hasChildNodes()) {
                // Empty tag, will just confuse translators if we leave it in
                $translatableNode->parentNode->removeChild($translatableNode);
            }
