Many textbooks indicate that the stratum basale is 1 cell-layer thick, while this drawing seems to highlight 2 or 3 cell layers and refers to them as the stratum basale. In general, even if they do not state this, they state that the stratum basale is directly connected to the basement membrane, ie not attached to another cell on their basal aspect. (eg "Stratum basale, also known as stratum germinativum, is the deepest layer, separated from the dermis by the basement membrane (basal lamina) and attached to the basement membrane by hemidesmosomes. The cells found in this layer are cuboidal to columnar mitotically active stem cells that are constantly producing keratinocytes." https://europepmc.org/article/nbk/nbk470464

This drawing therefore seems to have a very significant and fundamental error.
