Freeware[edit]

I don't know how to make the change, but this program is freeware and thus should use the freeware screenshots template, not the current template. Prof jerz 18:37, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification Request[edit]

I took this screenshot of Crowther's original game, which was never released commercially. I've had several personal e-mail communications with Crowther, who was fine with my publication of his original source code as part of an academic article published in 2007. The program was already publicly available by 1977, and when Don Woods contacted Crowther to ask him about the source code, Crowther willingly sent it to him. I'd welcome the input of some more knowledgeable Wikipedian, in order to resolve the concern about this screenshot as a copyright violation. This screen shot includes a very small fragment of the overall count of story-bearing words that appear in the source code, so if this were considered as a work of literature, this small selection fits the "proportionality" requirement for "fair use" for study and/or criticism. Since numerous free versions of the Crowther/Woods collaboration are available on the internet, this screenshot does not affect the financial viability of the intelletctual property. Since the full Crowther source code is freely available (on Don Woods's website and on my own), a static screenshot from one particular executable version based on that publicly available source code can hardly constitute a violation of fair use. I've asked Will Crowther whether he has any intellectual property concerns associated with a project that would archive his Adventure source code and executables, and he said he had no problem with it. I recognize that I can't just quote from his e-mail and expect that to solve everyone's concerns, but I'd welcome suggestions for how to proceed. Dennis G. Licensing[edit]

The source code and data files from the 1977 version of this program have no copyright notice.[1] The original ADVENT game was in circulation via the ARPANET before 1978 with no copyright notice so it lost any copyright protection. -- SWTPC6800 (talk) 02:50, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a screenshot of public domain software.
