Correct identification of the specimen[edit]

The species is identified as Alepisaurus ferox because 1896 it was the only known species of the genus Alepisaurus. But is shows Alepisaurus brevirostris (Gibbs 1960).

  • In Alepisaurus ferox the Dorsal fin is high in front, with several free rays. Head and snout are long. See here
  • Alepisaurus brevirostris has a Dorsal fin wich is low in front and ist formig a curve. Head and snout are short. See here
