Why was the update undone?[编辑]

@Capricorn4049: Why did you revert the update and what would you propose instead? Prototyperspective (留言) 14:32, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]

@Prototyperspective: See this guideline about when and how users should or should not overwrite existing files, expecially the paragraph "Files with current data". It is better to upload it as a new File, as you already did here (I linked it in the original Image description page as "other version"). If you simply overwrite it, the image will be overwritten wherever it is already embedded. This may not be what whoever embedded it wanted. For example, see en:Atmospheric_carbon_cycle#Gallery, where the caption would no longer match the image. --Capricorn4049 (留言) 11:14, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]
Okay, I was aware that it's not perfect but do you have any ideas what else to do other than manually going through each of the outdated file-uses and replacing them with the new image?
It should be updated at a central place once I think, especially when there's multiple files that have become outdated each of which used in many places which is probably also the case for some OWID charts/maps. I think it would be best if one could also view earlier charts from where the latest one is used but that the latest one is shown by default. For example if the images get replaced with interactive elements or get an arrow button that switches to an older version of the image, but neither seems currently possible. I have never used it, but the {{Current}} template seems to be exactly what you are lookin for. See also Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#CURRENT. However, if done so, there should be no Date in the Title and in the description.--Capricorn4049 (留言) 12:20, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]
I've made a new post about this at the template. If you have any input this please comment there, thanks. Prototyperspective (留言) 15:15, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[回复]
