Unidentified Saint

[edit]

The file description states the second saint depicted was "an unidentified St. Basil, possibly Basil the Great" and I cannot see how that conclusion came about. What the uploader identified as "a cognomen something like Antichion" is in my opinion misread and the proper name of the saint:

I'd interpret this depiction as Saint Pantaleon, and I am pretty sure that this is the name given on the right of the saint.

Not St Basil

[edit]

St Basil the Great should be depicted with

  1. an Omophorion marking him as a bishop (same as with St. Nicholas on the left, who has this attribute)
  2. a long tapered dark beard and thin and ascetic, not young
  3. a scroll or gospel book

None of these crucial symbols are present.

Name

[edit]
        Пoнтелеимон         (Ponteleimon)

Attributes

[edit]
A reference painting of St Pantaleon (r)

All attributes are present:

  1. martyr's palm branches are decorating the vestment
  2. in his right hand he holds the medical spatula
  3. in his left hand the medicine or salve box

Compare the depiction also with the reference on the right.

Combination

[edit]

In the orthodox world the pairing of St Nicholas and St Pantaleon is frequently seen (c.f. en:Boyana Church).

Looking forward to cross-checks of my analysis. --chris 21:06, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
