PNG version

Flag_of_Germany.svg

This file should be re-uploaded naming it Coat of arms of Germany, doesn't it? I'd also prefer using the color shades of the flag (gold: #FFCE00; red: #DC241F;) or using just the shades from the PNG version. • Madden 17:40, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guess you're right about the file name. I was not quite sure whether the term Bundeswappen is being used by English speaking people (I think Bundestag remains untranslated in most cases?)
The colors used are just a matter of taste since there's no law regulation on them. There's an article in the German wikipedia on this matter: From a strict heraldic point of view, the correct color representing gold should be pure yellow. Anyway, the German Ministry of the interior suggests to use gold:#FFD700 and red:#FF0000 for the flag. This photo shows that even German officials use flag versions with different colors at the same time.
Personally, I think that #FF0000 is too bright, so I used a darker red (#E00000), taken from [1], which shows an official(?) prototype. Meanwhile, I thought different about it. To me, #EE0000 seems to be a good choice.
For the gold, I just used the built-in SVG "gold" tone, which is somewhere between your suggestion and full yellow.
Actually, I'd suggest to change the colors of Flag_of_Germany.svg, since #DC241F makes no sense to me. What do you think? -- Pumbaa80 14:15, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, there are no official color definitions for the coat of arms (neither is the eagle defined). But in a world of digital media we should not refer to any precise reproduction of heraldic origins of the colors. It's just that the yellow of the PNG version looks more voluminous and deeper and more like gold, not so bright and superficial as in the SVG.
The flag shades are pretty fine for now. They are RGB approximations of the official Pantone specification. If they are used by all German officials is another question. There are different reasons for color variants...
I suggested the "Coat of arms of" file name because the WikiProject Flags has arranged a naming convention that suggests "Flag of FOO" for flags, which is a good idea for standardization. So why not transfer it to coats of arms? • Madden 00:17, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I do agree about the file name. But both of us were wrong about the colors of the Coat of Arms. Though the colors of the flag are not prescribed, the colors of the Coat of Arms indeed are. The only correct configuration is shown on the site of the Ministry of the Interior. I think it looks disgusting. On the other hand it looks much like real gold! BTW What do you mean by "official" Pantone specification? Maybe we should continue that discussion on the Flag site. --Pumbaa80 02:30, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I re-uploaded the image to Coat of Arms of Germany.svg, so let's end the discussion in this place. --Pumbaa80 15:20, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Typo[edit]

Well, the colours are alright. Let them as they are. But: the correct file name would be Coat of arms of Germany with a small a in arms... There's no reason to write it with a capital. • Madden 21:52, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh no... Since I'm not a native English speaker, I had a look at this site and found that a capital A would be the right choice. Well, I should have clicked one of the images ;-)
And now I'm not too keen on changing all these once again :-/ Feel free to do it --Pumbaa80 19:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This is such a trifle that I don't think it's worth correcting at all. There are really much more important things to do on Commons and in wikipedias. --AndreasPraefcke 20:54, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like this file being added to the Category:Black, red, yellow in heraldry, for it is one of the best known coats of arms fitting to this category. --ludger1961 (talk) 05:40, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
