First of all I ,having been involved in the tank battle , March 3rd 1969 can tell you that the morning after the battle a M 88 tank retriever and our , the 299th combat Engrs D 7 E dozer went out and drug the the easiest retrievable PT 76 back to the Ben Het camp. From there it wea loaded on a lowboy and transported back to Dak To and then to Pleiku .There were A Special Forces A team , mountain yard mike forces , the 69th tankers , I think the 2nd of the 92 artillery battery and 2 platoons of the 299th combat Engrs there. Our position at the camp was by the entrance to the camp overlooking the short PSP runway.just befor nightfall on the 3rd app plt Ssg , Ssg Nels Chapman advised us of the situation , passed out LAWS light anti tank weapons any said if the PT 76’s get in the camp , we were to try to make it back too Dak To any way we could , about a 12 mile hump . Luckily our tankers and artillery took care of business . As I think back on that night ,we who made it out of there owe our lives to those tankers and artillery !
