Westminster

[edit]

Great map! Westminster should not be marked "City of Westminster" unless the other cities are marked the same. MRSCTalk 19:39, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tandridge, not Tanbridge

[edit]

Great map, but I've noticed a mistake. The easternmost district in Surrey is misspelled as "Tanbridge" (4th letter is a B), when the correct spelling is "Tandridge" (4th letter is a D).— Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.58.47.170 (talk • contribs)

Thanks, good spot! I've fixed it now XrysD TALK 14:28, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Middlesbrough

[edit]

Hi, same guy from a few years back. I happened to notice another mistake. Middlesbrough is misspelled as "Middlesborough". There is only one "O" in the name. Oh, and there should be a comma after the first word in "Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole". Thank you. - 87.58.119.203 08:55, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again! Have fixed it as well as adding in 2021 Northamptonshire changes to original master file. XrysD TALK 15:55, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Colours

[edit]

Hi @XrysD! Firstly, this is a great map, good work. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to tweak the colours of the image so that the different types of local authority were more clearly differentiated; this would be helpful at Wikipedia articles such as Local Government in England[1]]. A possible scheme could be:

  • Unitary authorities: red
  • Non-metropolitan counties and non-metropolitan districts: blue
  • Metropolitan district: green
  • London borough: yellow
  • Sui generis: purple

As a side note, it would be good if 'counties' in the key could be changed to 'non-metropolitan counties', as there's a few types of county and it's best to be clear about which is which. Let me know what you think, A.D.Hope (talk) 10:55, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @A.D.Hope, thanks for the kind words :) I think the current style is fine in general (e.g for Subdivisions of England) as the entity name already shows what type of area it is. I don't want to over-emphasize that aspect for the map as the type of authority isn't a part of the hierarchical subdivision, which is what the map shows. So for example there is no Parent Unitary Authority under which all unitary authorities sit which is what a different colour would imply in the subdivision context. But in the context of Local Government in England what you suggest makes sense as you are trying to show the different government types there. So I will create a derived work specifically for the Local Government in England article along the lines that you suggest. I will amend the key to refer to non-metropolitan county though. How does that sound? XrysD TALK 12:40, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean, and you seem to understand what I mean! I'd really appreciate it if you could make that derived work, it'll make the local government article much easier to understand. Thank you :) A.D.Hope (talk) 12:44, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great! It's just a simple re-colour so shouldn't take long to do for you. Might even be able to do it today! I'll ping you when it's ready. XrysD TALK 13:01, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @A.D.Hope, the new map is complete and up on the Local government in England page. I used colours from the WP approved color brewer set that gave the clearest visual distinction between the areas. XrysD TALK 12:05, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've just seen the page, and the new map looks fantastic! Thank you for creating it, and so quickly as well. I really appreciate it. A.D.Hope (talk) 13:16, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
