I would like to use this photograph in a work.
It seems reasonable to believe that the work is out of copyright and therefore in the public domain, but when I look up the source credited,
a publisher is asking $575.00 USD for rights to use the photograph. At the same time, apparently this publisher has not ordered the photo to be taken down from Wikimedia Commons. The man was born in 1871 and he does not appear old enough at the time of this photograph for the photograph to still be in copyright under Italian or U.S. law.
