Not Formica rufa[edit]

This is a very nice picture! But the ant depicted is not Formica rufa, as it has way denser pilosity (=more standing hairs) than a rufa worker would have (per example, keys usually say there should be 0-3 hairs on the back of the head of F. rufa, where we see ~60 here).

Instead this ant could be Formica truncorum - a relative of F. rufa that also usually has a red head without any dark markings, as in this picture (F. rufa normaly have black forehead), but this would have to be confirmed by an actuall examination of the specimen.
