De bijgaande tekening is van een arterie (slagader). Een vene (ader) heeft dezelfde structuur bestaande uit 3 lagen echter met name de middelste tunica media bevat bij een vene veel minder elastische en spier vezels. De reden hiervan is dat de bloeddruk in de venen veel lager is.

I would like to suggest that, at least according to the understanding of physiology I gained at university, the innermost layer is *not* the basement membrane but actually the Tunica Intima, with the basement membrane directly *external* to that, between the Tunical Intima and the Tunica Media. Furthermore, I believe the outermost layer may be called the Tunica Adventitia.
