[2] 11:23, 27 March 2007 User:Hrc Picture of a M2 camera

Actually, this is not a M3, but a M2. The M2 was issued in order to provide a less costly alternative to the M3 - put in other words, in order to reduce production costs. That was done, in particular, by suppressing the frames around the windows on the top cover (thus gaining 30' on production time) and replacing automatic by manual resetting of film advance dial. The other novelty of the M2 was it providing automatic changing of luminous frames for 35mm, 50mm and 90mm lenses, instead of 50mm, 90mm and 135mm in the M3 vewfinder.

The M2 commenced production in 1957, and was launched on the market in 1958 (first serial # 926001), but this specimen is more recent, as is testified by the seven-digit serial number. The number is barely readable here, but it seems on the picture to begin with 1 103..., which would indicate a production in 1961 or 1962. The M2 was used as a favorite companion by many photo-journalists, mainly because its viewfinder enabled the 35mm lenses to be used without adapter. More than the M3, its design is the basis for all the subsequent M cameras, especially the current MP.
